HC Deb 12 November 1970 vol 806 cc219-20W
32. Mr. Booth

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he will ascertain to what extent employers are transferring men between jobs within their employ when laying off, to reduce their redundancy payments liability.

Mr. Bryan

Inquiries we have made suggest that many employers offer alternative jobs, if possible, as a means of avoiding dismissal or lay-off. An employee who refuses a written offer made in due time may still be entitled to a redundancy payment if the new job is unsuitable or his refusal is reasonable. If he accepts, the employment counts as continuous.

Mr. Moyle

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he has reviewed the Redundancy Payments Act, 1965 with a view to reducing payments made thereunder; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. R. Carr

At present I have nothing to add to my reply on 16th July to the Question by my hon. Friend the Member for Worcestershire, South (Sir G. Nabarro).—[Vol. 803, c. 1703.]
