HC Deb 11 November 1970 vol 806 c201W
94. Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) what was the number of mastitis cases in Wales for the years 1959, 1963, 1967 and 1969; and what were the comparable figures for the East Flintshire Division;

(2) if he will supply figures concerning the percentage number of dairy cattle in Wales and East Flintshire affected by mastitis in the latest year for which information is available.

Mr. Anthony Stodart

Mastitis is not a notifiable condition and the statistics requested are not therefore available, but information from the field suggests that some 50 per cent. of all milking animals in England and Wales are affected to some extent. There is no reason to suppose that the incidence of the condition in Wales or Flintshire differs from this general pattern although the condition known as summer mastitis has been somewhat more prevalent than usual in Wales this year.
