HC Deb 11 November 1970 vol 806 cc212-3W
Mr. Caerwyn Roderick

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what are the latest annual figures for Wales, comparing them with the figures for England and Wales as a whole, for expenditure on the Health Service, the incidence of illness, infant mortality, the number of hospital beds available and the average waiting time for a hospital bed, respectively.

Mr. Peter Thomas

The gross voted expenditure by health services plus gross revenue expenditure by local health authorities for 1970–71 is as follows:

£ million
Wales 106.8
England and Wales 1,844.7
It is not possible to make a simple comparison of the incidence of illness. However, the average numbers of certified absences from work due to sickness during 1969 were:
Wales 83,700
England and Wales 877,100
The numbers of discharges or deaths from hospitals in 1969 were:
Wales 303,829
England and Wales 5,282,160
The rates (per thousand live births) of deaths of infants under one year of age in 1969 were:
Wales 19
England and Wales 18
The numbers of staffed in-patient beds in 1969 were:
Wales 26,846
England and Wales 461,126
Figures of average waiting times would not be meaningful. In 1969 the waiting lists for in-patient treatment in all specialities were:
Wales 29,100
England and Wales 561,365
