HC Deb 10 November 1970 vol 806 cc153-7W
Mr. Alec Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list the trunk road schemes at present in the preparation pool, the estimated cost of each scheme and the date on which it was announced that the scheme would be included in the preparation pool.

Mr. Peter Thomas

Details are as follows:

replied to the circulars are—Aberaeron U.D.C., Aberaeron R.D.C., Amlwch U.D.C., Festiniog U.D.C. and Machynlleth R.D.C. A number of other authorities have given incomplete replies, generally because they are reviewing their policies and programmes.

Mr. Alec Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what assessment he has made of the local authorities slum clearance programmes submitted to him in response to his circular; and what is his estimate of the rate of slum clearance in the next two years.

Mr. Peter Thomas

It seems likely that some Welsh authorities have underestimated the extent of their unfitness problem and that their programmes could with advantage be accelerated. In the programmes supplied to my predecessor in 1969, local authorities estimated that they would clear or close 3,943 unfit houses in 1970; but it seems very unlikely that the 1970 figure will greatly exceed the 1969 figure of 2,344.

I hope to see local authorities achieve at least their 1969 estimated rate of clearance over the next two years and shall continue to urge them to aim at a much faster rate of clearance and closure.

Mr. Alec Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list the trunk road schemes at present under construction, the dates when the schemes were included in the preparation pool, the dates when they were included in the firm

Mr. Alec Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list the trunk road schemes at present in the firm programme, giving details of the cost of each scheme, the date when the scheme was included in the preparation pool, the date when the scheme was included in the firm programme, the estimated time it would take to begin the work from the date of its inclusion in the firm programme, the current estimate of when the

programme, the dates when they went out to tender, the dates when the tenders were accepted, the dates when the schemes commenced, the estimated dates of completion; and whether the schemes are on schedule.

Mr. Peter Thomas

The following information relates to trunk road schemes each costing over £250,000. There are in addition a considerable number of schemes costing under £250,000 but to obtain information about all these schemes would be disproportionately costly and time consuming.

The trunk road preparation pool was introduced early in 1967. All major schemes now under construction were added to the programme before that date. The dates shown in the second column are the dates of the first announcement of the inclusion of each scheme in the road programme. Work on the A470 and New Midlands Road was planned to be carried out in stages.

scheme will go out to tender, the estimated date of commencement of the work and the estimated date of completion.
