HC Deb 10 November 1970 vol 806 c87W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many overseas doctors are now practising within the National Health Service; and if he will make a statement on the first 12 months working of the scheme for compulsory assessment.

Mr. Alison

At 30th September, 1969, the last date for which full figures are available, there were in the National Health Service in England and Wales about 10,750 overseas-born doctors. This figure excludes locums, and for general practice it includes only principals providing full general medical services. Detailed figures, for England appear in my Department's Annual Report for 1969. The compulsory attachment scheme was not introduced till 28th November, 1969.
