asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the percentage of children in Lanarkshire staying at school after the statutory leaving age in the year 1963–64; and what was the comparable figure in the latest year for which details are available.

In January, 1964, the proportion of 15-year-olds who had stayed at school in Lanarkshire after the statutory leaving date was 28.2 per cent. of that age group. The corresponding percentages for 16, 17 and 18-year-olds were 18.3, 10.9 and 2.3. In January, 1970 the proportion of 15-year-olds who had stayed at school in Lanarkshire after the statutory leaving date was 41.5 per cent. of that age group. The corresponding percentages for 16, 17 and 18-year-olds were 28.8, 15.4 and 2.3.
