HC Deb 10 November 1970 vol 806 cc134-5W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what, on the latest known figures, is the estimated saving to the Treasury on the basis that the present six and a half guineas a day attendance money paid to the House of Lords were abolished; and whether, in the interests of saving Government expenditure, he will consider introducing such methods of saving of the taxpayers' money.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

Peers are entitled to claim reimbursement of the expenses they incur up to a maximum of £6 10s. for each day of attendance at sittings of the House. The estimated cost in the current year is £140,000. As to the second part of the Question, the answer is "No."

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will seek powers to review the payment of the 6½ guineas a day tax-free attendance allowance paid to Members of the House of Lords, so that this is only paid on a means test basis of proved personal need, and where full-time attendance is given to the Upper House.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

No.
