HC Deb 10 November 1970 vol 806 cc90-1W
Mr. Ron Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the current figures relating to the shortage of medical and consultant and other staff for hospitals in the city of Carlisle.

Mr. Alison

At 30th September, 1970, there were 63 medical staff—33 consultants and 30 others—working in the four hospitals in the City of Carlisle; some of them also work part-time in other hospitals of the East Cumberland Group. The figures show an increase of one, a consultant, compared with a year ago. There were five vacant posts—two consultant and three in other grades. Four appointments have since been made, including two consultants who will take up their posts in January.

Mr. Ron Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the number of general practitioners and the average number of patients on the lists in the City of Carlisle for the latest available date.

Mr. Alison

32 doctors are now providing full general medical services in the area of the Carlisle Executive Council and the average list at 1st October, 1970, was 2,571 patients.
