39. Mr. J. H. Osborn

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what is his revised estimate for the current year of the total expenditure on Government research, including expenditure on Government research establishments and laboratories for which he is responsible; and how this compares with previous years.

Mr. Ridley

The Estimate for expenditure on research and development in Government establishments (including those of the Atomic Energy Authority) in 1970–71 is £63 million. The Estimates for 1968–69 and 1969–70 were about the same.

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what is his revised estimate of expenditure for Government sponsored research and development within British industry, including sponsored development contracts, and expenditure on research associations.

Mr. Ridley

The 1970–71 Estimate contained about £12 million for Government expenditure by the Department on research and development within British industry, including the research associations.
