§ 60. Mr. Rankinasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what steps he proposes taking to protect people in London against the excessive noise made by aircraft using Heathrow Airport.
§ Mr. Anthony GrantA degree of protection is afforded by use of minimum noise routes, preferential runways, noise-monitored take-off procedures, height-monitored approaches, restrictions on night traffic, assistance with sound insulation and control of ground running. We propose to maintain these measures and where practicable improve on them.
§ Mr. Hugh Jenkinsasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he will seek to introduce an aircraft noise tax at Heathrow Airport along lines recommended to him by the Local Authorities Aircraft Noise Council.
§ Mr. Anthony GrantNo. This could do nothing to quieten existing aircraft, which airlines must continue to use for a number of years; and adequate funds are already available both here and in the United States for research to reduce their noise.
§ Mr. Hugh Jenkinsasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what has been the level and nature of the public response to his invitation to report on the noise effect of the changes made for a trial period in landing and departure procedures at Heathrow, London Airport.
§ Mr. Anthony GrantThere was little response to the invitation, and the few reports of increased disturbance received could not be related to the trials. Most were received before the trials began.
