§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Minister for the Civil Service who, other than Ministers of the Crown, are entitled to use the facilities of the State car pool service; whether any check is kept that such journeys are not for private, personal, political or other purposes connected with the user's business activities; and whether, when a vehicle is used for transport to and from the user's private home and office or place of employment, he is assessed for tax purposes in the same way as any other private individual or Member of Parliament.
§ Mr. David HowellIn addition to Ministers, the Leader of the Opposition, the Chairmen of the National Board for Prices and Incomes, the Commission for Industrial Relations and the Metrication Board, the Director-General of the National Economic Development Office and civil servants are entitled to the use of the facilities of the State car pool.
A check is kept that official cars are used only in connection with official business. The Answer given by my hon. Friend the Financial Secretary on 3rd November about the liability to tax of Ministers who use official cars between their homes and offices also holds good for other users of the State car pool.—[Vol. 805, c. 321–2.]
