HC Deb 06 November 1970 vol 805 c480W
Mr. James Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will consider introducing an invalid vehicle for disabled drivers that will allow the carrying of one passenger.

Mr. Alison

The implications of providing an invalid vehicle with passenger-carrying facilities would be considerable and we have at present no plans to develop the service in this way.

Mr. James Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the estimated cost of converting an ordinary family motor car for use by a disabled driver.

Mr. Alison

The cost of converting a family motor-car to hand control is usually about £50, although it may vary considerably with the kind of car and nature of the disability. Other modifications might range from small mechanical changes of insignificant cost to restructuring of bodies costing hundreds of pounds. For some disabilities no modification is possible.
