Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Lord President of the Council why the Government have declined to refer the question of Members of Parliament's salaries to the National Board for Prices and Incomes or some similar independent inquiry whilst accepting this principle in the case of the top-paid Servicemen; and whether the Government intend to implement the report in the latter case.

Such a reference would not be appropriate in present economic circumstances. I understand that the Government's decision on the implementation of the Board's report on the pay of senior officers will be announced when the report is published.
