HC Deb 05 November 1970 vol 805 cc418-9W
Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is his estimate of the number of employable disabled persons now seeking work, and of the percentage of employable disabled persons who are currently unemployed.

Mr. Dudley Smith

It is not possible to estimate the number of employable disabled persons because not all such people are registered as disabled or registered for employment. The situation is also affected by the work potential of the individual and the conditions of employment. The number of adult registered disabled persons registered for employment on 1st October was 72,888 of whom 4,697 were temporarily sick and 68,141 were unemployed. The unemployed represented 10.8 per cent. of all people who have chosen to register under the Disabled Persons (Employment) Act, 1944.
