HC Deb 04 November 1970 vol 805 cc374-5W
106. Mr. Murray

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will take steps to strengthen the power of police officers in Scotland to arrest and search persons suspected to be committing a crime.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

The existing powers are being considered by the Thomson Committee as part of its examination of trial and pre-trial procedures in Scotland.

108. Mr. Dempsey

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if, with a view to retaining experienced police officers and attracting suitable recruits, and preventing further depletion of the police force in Scotland, he will approve the application by the Police Federation for a 35 per cent. increase in pay and a reduction from nine to six years in reaching a salary maximum; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

Negotiations on this claim are currently under way in the Police Council for the United Kingdom and I have as yet received no recommendation from it.

Mr. Gregor Mackenzie

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland when he will announce his proposals for increasing police manpower in Scotland.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

I propose to undertake a review of police establishments and later this month I shall be consulting the Police Advisory Board for Scotland about the ways in which it might most usefully be carried out.
