HC Deb 03 November 1970 vol 805 c317W
70. Mr. W. T. Williams

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will take steps to provide that old-age pensions shall be free from income tax, as is the case in unemployment pay, sickness benefits and allied supplementary benefits; and what is his estimate of the cost to the Exchequer of such concessions in a full year.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

The cost of exempting National Insurance retirement pensions would be about £175 million, and I cannot accept the hon. Member's suggestion.
