Mr. Bishop

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what proposals he has received for the conversion of coal-powered power stations to other fuels; if he will detail the power stations concerned; what estimate he has of the number of miners likely to be affected in each case; and what action he proposes to take to provide additional facilities for their retraining and for alternative employment.

The Central Electricity Generating Board has made the following applications to convert coal-fired power stations to other fuels:

C.E.G.B. Region Station Fuel(s) proposed
North Eastern Kirkstall Oil
North Western Padiham Oil
South Western Portsmouth Oil
South Eastern West Thurrock Coal/Gas (dual-firing)
The implications for the coal industry will be taken into account before decisions are taken.
