Notes:

(a) The grants to BCURA and ERA are not being renewed after 31st December, 1970 and 31st December, 1974 respectively.

(b) The current grant periods in the case of CTRA and BCRA come to an end in March, 1973 and December, 1973 respectively.

(c) It is not practicable to separate fuel research expenditure from the total budget in these cases.

(d) Includes research into Coal Combustion and Processing; Gas manufacture, production, storage, treatment, basic research and research into industrial, domestic and commercial utilisation of gas; and research into nuclear and conventional systems of steam raising and utilisation of electricity.

(e) Part of a wider programme on reactor research and development.

In addition a part of the total research budget of £8½ million (1969–70) of the British Steel Corporation relates to fuel research.
