asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what action he proposes to take to implement the proposals of the Feilden Report on Engineering Design and to increase the status of engineers and designers.

As my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced on Tuesday, 27th October, it has been decided not to set up the new Design Council in present circumstances. I have asked the Council of Industrial Design and the Council of Engineering Institutions to examine how, without prejudice to the degree of future Government support, they could make progress towards the implementation of these proposals.
