§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity what was the date of appointment of Mr. Aubrey Jones to his first situation by the Government and at what salary; what changes have taken place since in appointment and salary; what were the costs of this board, staff and officials at the commencement and at the latest convenient stated date; and what will be the effect of his new appointment on Government expenditure.
§ Mr. Dell:Mr. Aubrey Jones was appointed Chairman of the National Board for Prices and Incomes for five years from 26th April, 1965, at an annual salary of £15,000. His appointment has been extended, at the same salary, until 31st October, 1970, or the date of the board's dissolution, whichever is earlier.
Expenditure on salaries, fees, travelling and incidental expenses of the board was £208,200 in the financial year 1965–66 and £934,000 in 1969–70. Other expenditure was, broadly, £78,000 in 1965–66 and £380,000 in 1969–70.
Mr. Jones has expressed his willingness to accept an invitation to serve as Chairman of the Commission for Industry and Manpower, the salary envisaged for this post being £18,000 a year. The Bill to establish this body is now before the House, and the Financial Memorandum accompanying the Bill estimates annual expenditure on the commission as£1¾ million.
