HC Deb 15 May 1970 vol 801 cc420-1W
Mr. Chichester-Clark

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many current cases are known to his Department of heads of families drawing supplementary benefit, whose previous employment resulted in their being paid less than the appropriate scale of supplementary benefit.

Mr. Ennals:

At the end of February 28,850 claimants had their supplementary benefit restricted under the wage stop provisions of the Ministry of Social Security Act, 1966.

Sir B. Rhys Williams

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the total number of people currently living on supplementary benefits; and what was the number on the same date in 1964.

Mr. Ennals:

The number of recipients of a regular weekly payment of supplementary benefit at November, 1969 was 2,688,000 covering the requirements of 4,097,000 persons; the numbers under the National Assistance scheme at November, 1964 were 1,961,000 and 2,774,000 respectively.
