HC Deb 14 May 1970 vol 801 c312W
49. Captain W. Elliot

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will take steps to enable those South Africans of many years residence in this country to become British citizens who failed to do so because of a misunderstanding after South Africa left the Commonwealth.

Mr. Elystan Morgan:

A South African with five years' residence here is eligible to apply for naturalisation. South Africans were given special facilities up to the end of 1965 to acquire citizenship of the United Kingdom and Colonies by registration. My right hon. Friend does not intend to revive those facilities.
