HC Deb 14 May 1970 vol 801 cc341-2W
62. Mr. Chichester-Clark

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many civilians are now employed by his Department in Northern Ireland; what was the figure for 1967, 1968 and 1969 at the equivalent date; and what estimate he has formed of the numbers likely to be employed in 1971.

Mr. Hattersley:

5,070 at 1st April, 1970; 5,020, 5,060 and 5,050 at 1st April, 1967, 1968 and 1969 respectively. The number presently estimated for 1st April, 1971, is 4,600; but the Army's planned occupation of the Navy's accommodation at Londonderry and the R.A.F. Station at Ballykelly is likely to generate a requirement for a limited number of additional civilian employees during 1971.
