HC Deb 07 May 1970 vol 801 cc169-70W
Mr. Brooks

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will indicate the number and details of courses designed to prepare future teachers for work in multi-racial schools; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Fowler:

Early in 1969, 90 per cent, of colleges of education offered in their courses some training in race relations or the educational and social problems of immigrant children, and 30 per cent. are deeply involved in this aspect of teacher education.

The nature and organisation of the work varies widely, and for a more detailed statement I would refer my hon. Friend to a memorandum by the Department which is published as Appendix 8 in Volume IV of the Report of the Select Committee on Race Relations and Immi- gration on the problems of coloured Sixth Form Science and Mathematics school leavers.
