64. Mr. Brewis

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many pupils in grant-aided schools have their fees paid directly or indirectly by education authorities; and whether he will state the number of such sponsored pupils who are boarders.

Mr. Ross:

There are long-standing arrangements under which four education authorities pay in full or in part the fees of certain pupils attending six grant-aided schools, 763 pupils, 17 of whom are boarders, are covered by such and 1965 to 1969, respectively; and if he will give a breakdown of the global figures.

Mr. Ross:

For the financial years ended 31st March, £515 million in the five years 1960–64 and –805 million in the five years 1965–69.

Following is the information:

arrangements. A further five pupils—four of them boarders—have their fees paid in full or in part by Scottish authorities; and 29 boarders have their fees paid in full or in part by English education authorities.
