HC Deb 06 May 1970 vol 801 cc151-2W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Minister of Public Building and Works whether, in view of the losses in lives, buildings and materials due to fires, he will give an assurance that, to combat this, all Government offices and buildings carry out a regular drill.

Mr. Loughlin:

Responsibility for fire drill rests with occupying Departments. My Department provides advice, taking account of the requirements of the Factories Act, 1961, and the Offices, Shops and Railway Premises Act, 1963.

Evacuation of staff is recommended as a drill wherever by reason of the construction of a building or other exceptional circumstance failure to follow a set procedure could have serious consequences.
