HL Deb 05 May 1970 vol 310 cc213-4WA
LORD MOLSON

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they can confirm the estimate given on February 6, 1969, by Mr. Kenneth Robinson, when Minister of Planning and Land, that by 1973 the country will have a margin of about one million more houses than households and consequently the 5 per cent. margin needed for mobility of labour and the ordinary working of the housing market.

THE PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF HOUSING AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT (LORD KEN-NET)

The nation-wide excess of houses over households in 1973 is expected to be about 1 million. As Mr. Robinson explained at the time, this surplus will not be evenly spread throughout the country, and I regret that shortage of housing and bad housing must be expected to continue beyond this date in some places.

House adjourned at twenty-minutes before eight o'clock.
