HC Deb 04 May 1970 vol 801 c10W
54. Mr. McMaster

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations are being made to the Chinese Government with respect to the case of George Watt; what progress has been made in efforts to secure his early release and return to the United Kingdom: and if any diplomatic access has been granted to him since his imprisonment.

Mr. George Thomson:

Despite frequent representations on his behalf to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Peking and to the Chinese Chargé d'Affaires in London, there has been no progress towards obtaining the early release of Mr. Watt. On 20th March I raised Mr. Watt's case with the Chinese Chargé d'Affaires and requested consular access to him. Subsequently our Mission in Peking has reminded the Chinese authorities of our requests but there has been no response from the Chinese.
