HC Deb 01 May 1970 vol 800 c416W
Mr. Fortescue

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what use his Department makes of the National Giro for regular payments of salaries and pensions, and for other purposes; and, in view of the under-used capacity of the Giro, whether he will consider using it more.

Mr. Taverne:

The Treasury, Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise all provide certain facilities for salaries and pensions to be paid through the Giro, where requested. The Inland Revenue has also introduced general facilities for the payment of tax by this method.

The degree of use must depend upon the extent to which people avail themselves of the facilities provided, and upon considerations of economy, efficiency and convenience.
