HC Deb 26 March 1970 vol 798 cc494-5W
Mr. Higgins

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will state corresponding totals to those given for employment upon Pay-As-You-Earn, for the number of Inland Revenue employees involved principally in work upon corporation tax, Schedule D income tax, other income tax, surtax, and capital gains tax, respectively, or such information on the allocation of this work as is available.

Mr. Taverne

Because of the complex inter-relationship between the various taxes, it has always been recognised that it is difficult to estimate the number of staff employed on particular taxes. The Inland Revenue is engaged on exercises which will put it in a better position to make estimates but it will be some time before the results are available. In the meantime, the following figures give very broadly the number of staff employed on the taxes named:

Corporation tax and Schedule D income tax 15,000
Other income tax (including P.A.Y.E.) 35,000
Surtax 2,500
Capital Gains Tax 2,000

It is not possible to make separate estimates for corporation and Schedule D income tax.
