HC Deb 26 March 1970 vol 798 c483W
Mr. Oakes

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is satisfied that there are sufficient places in remand homes in the Lancashire area; what representations he has received on this subject during the last 12 months; and what expansion of available places there will be during the next year in Lancashire.

Mr. Elystan Morgan

I have no evidence of any general shortage of remand home places in Lancashire. Letters were received from seven juvenile courts about shortages of places at different times in different areas. Where appropriate, these were brought to the attention of the local authorities concerned, with whom responsibility rests for providing remand homes. 33 more places should be available by the end of March, 1971.

Mr. Carlisle

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the cause of the shortage of remand centre places for girls in the North-West of England; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

My right hon. Friend is not aware of any such shortage.
