Mr. James Davidson

asked the Minister of Transport what was the total cost to date of closing railway workshops in the last four months, inclusive of redundancy payments, travel and removal allowances, loss on sale of premises and fixed equipment, and all other relevant costs.

Mr. Murray:

The only railway workshop to be closed in the last four months was that at lnverurie. British Railways says that the cost to date is £143,000, comprising £92,000 redundancy payments and travel and removal allowances, and £51,000 other expenditure. Disposal of assets has realised £70,000. The savings resulting from the closure are currently estimated as at least £150,000 per annum.
