HC Deb 26 March 1970 vol 798 c511W
Mr. Gwynfor Evans

asked the Minister of Transport what proportion of the total mileage of public roads in England is motorway and dual carriageway, respectively; and what will be the proportion in 1975.

Mr. Bob Brown

There are some 1,900 miles of dual carriageway, including 574 miles of motorway, in use at the present time representing approximately 1–25 per cent and 0–4 per cent. respectively of the total mileage of public roads in England. By 1975, depending on the progress of individual schemes and the availability of funds, I hope that some 1,300 miles of motorway representing 0.85 per cent. of the mileage of public roads will be in use.

The total mileage of all dual carriageways in 1975 will depend on the completion of a large number of trunk and principal road schemes in various stages of preparation or not yet prepared and cannot therefore be accurately assessed.
