HC Deb 26 March 1970 vol 798 cc472-4W
Mr. Ashton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) what are the latest relative comparable figures for Derbyshire County Council, Staffordshire County Council, Durham County Council and Nottinghamshire County Council, and also the national average figures for all county councils, with regard to their expenditure on education for each year from 1960 to 1969; and what percentage of this was provided by each county;

(2) what was the expenditure on education in the Nottinghamshire County Council area in each year from 1960 to 1969; and what percentage of this was provided by the county council.

Mr. Edward Short

The expenditure on education by Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Durham and Nottinghamshire County Councils, and by all county councils, from 1960–61 to 1968–69 is set out in the table below.

There is no specific grant towards local authority expenditure on education, which together with other services is assisted through the rate support grant which is paid in aid of revenues of the local authority generally. It is not possible therefore to say exactly what proportion of local authority expenditure on education is met by grant or rates.

The table below shows the proportion of the net revenue expenditure of the county councils which fell to be met from the rates. The effect of this expenditure on domestic rates has been reduced since 1967–68 by the domestic element, but this is paid direct to rating authorities and is not reflected in the table. The figures for the police services have been omitted because in many cases responsibility for the service was transferred to joint police authorities during the period under review.

Figures for 1959–60 are not available.
