HC Deb 26 March 1970 vol 798 cc455-6W
9. Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity if she will take steps to provide Government grant for all registered disabled persons in employment, the level to depend on the degree of disablement.

Mr. Dell

No. People are registered under the Disabled Persons (Employment) Act, 1944, only if they are regarded as capable of remunerative employment. If care is taken in assessing working capacity and in carefully selecting employment, the great majority can take their place in industry on equal terms with the able-bodied. Sheltered employment subsidised by the Government is provided for those who, because of the severity of their disability, cannot compete under ordinary conditions.
