HC Deb 26 March 1970 vol 798 c550W
Mr. Bagier

asked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications how many of the directions given to the British Broadcasting Corporation under the licence and agreement remain in force.

Mr. Stonehouse

There are five directions in force relating to technical and procedural matters. The direction requiring the Corporation to refrain from broadcasting matter in particular classes is also in force. This is confined to the following:

  1. 1. Matters expressing the opinion of the Corporation on current affairs or on matters of public policy.
  2. 2. Matters conveying subliminal messages.
The directions given in 1955 on party political broadcasts were withdrawn in 1965.
