HC Deb 25 March 1970 vol 798 cc451-2W
Mr. Ron Lewis

asked the Minister of Technology what representations have been made to him regarding the future work load at Spadeadam; what redundancies are foreseen; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Carmichael

No representations about the future work load have been received. Current orders for Blue Streak are expected to provide work until the end of 1971 and it is possible that E.L.D.O. may require additional vehicles thereafter. Activity at Spadeadam has, however, been declining for the past two years and, despite normal wastage, there is now some excess of staff over requirements in certain Departments.

Ways of dealing with this problem are being examined by the Ministry's agent, Rolls-Royce Ltd., with representatives of the trade unions concerned. The number of employees affected this year is not likely to exceed 75.
