HC Deb 25 March 1970 vol 798 cc447-8W
Mr. Maxwell-Hyslop

asked the Secretary of State for Local Government and Regional Planning what plans he has, in view of uncertainty arising from the division of powers of scheduling and listing between the Ministry of Public Building and Works and the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, and the overlap in the functions of other official bodies in the field, for the amalgamation of official bodies concerned with the listing and conservation of historic buildings.

Mr. Crosland

None. Under Part V of the Town and Country Planning Act, 1968 a building which is both scheduled as an ancient monument and listed as of special architectural or historic interest is controlled by the legislation relating to scheduled ancient monuments. I have seen no evidence to suggest that there is in practice significant overlapping of functions between the official bodies concerned.
