HC Deb 25 March 1970 vol 798 cc409-11W
Mr. Robert Howarth

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he has given consideration to the publication of information about numbers of reports of air-misses involving civil aircraft; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Goronwy Roberts

Yes. It is proposed to publish annually the total numbers of reports of air-misses, in United Kingdom airspace, involving civil aircraft and public transport aircraft, divided into categories as determined by the Air-Miss Working Group according to the degree of risk, if any. Annual total numbers of aircraft movements will also be given. The information for this and future years will be published in the Annual Survey of Accidents to Aircraft on the United Kingdom Register. With permission I will publish the numbers in respect of the years 1963 to 1969 in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

* The reports are categorised by the Airmiss Working Group as A, B and C, to give their judgment of the degree of danger if any from risk of collision. The general lines of these categories are as follows:
Category A is assigned when it is considered that, in the prevailing circumstances, there was a significant risk of collision, giving rise to danger.
Category B is assigned when it is considered that, in the prevailing circumstances, the situation was less dangerous but when aircraft were close enough to cause anxiety to one or both of the pilots although the risk of collision was slight.
Category C is assigned where, although the aircraft may have been closer or reported to to have been closer than normally desirable, there was no danger and no significant risk of collision.
† Numbers of aircraft movements exclude movements at some aerodromes and are estimated where actual information is not available.
