HC Deb 24 March 1970 vol 798 cc366-7W
Mr. Lomas

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why three times the amount of tax is imposed on home-produced whisky compared to imported wines; and if he will show the amount received in each case.

Mr. Taverne

The relationship between the duties on spirits and on wines has been developed under successive Chancellors over many years. In 1969 net receipts of duty from mature British spirits (most of which is whisky) and from imported wine were about £174 million and £65 million, respectively.
