HC Deb 24 March 1970 vol 798 c327W
60. Mr. John Hall

asked the Minister of Transport what consultations he had with his Landscape Advisory Committee before deciding on the route of the M40 across the Chiltern Escarpment.

Mr. Mulley

The Committee was very fully consulted and made two visits to the area. The main point at issue was whether the motorway route should go through the wooded area to the north of A40 or the open downland to the south. A number of woodland routes were considered, including one which differed only in minor detail from the Arup-Jellicoe route. The Committee recommended firmly in favour of the downland route which I have now adopted, as being the least damaging to the environment.
