HL Deb 24 March 1970 vol 308 cc1398-9WA
LORD ARDWICK

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are satisfied with the progress made by English planning authorities in identifying those parts of their areas that are of special architectural or historic interest, and in designating them as conservation areas under the Civic Amenities Act 1967.

THE PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF HOUSING AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT (LORD KENNET)

There are 159 local planning authorities in England, and by December 31, 1969, 94 of them had, as required by Section 1(4) of the Civic Amenities Act 1967, notified my right honourable friend the Minister of Housing and Local Government of the designation of 769 conservation areas. I attach a list of the authorities to whom I have written congratulating them on their progress. I know that many others have good plans, and I am looking forward to being able to congratulate them on their achievements in due course. Others, again, appear to have no plans. The following are the local planning authorities to whom, on March 11, 1970, 1 wrote a letter of congratulation:
