HC Deb 24 March 1970 vol 798 cc330-1W
72. Mr. Godman Irvine

asked the Minister of Transport if he will take steps to ensure that, in streets of high amenity value, traffic restrictions may be indicated by other means than yellow line markings on the carriageway.

Mr. Mulley

Yellow lines were introduced to reduce the forest of signs previously necessary. Drivers now expect to see them wherever waiting is restricted. In the next revision of the Regulations however I am enabling local authorities to use narrower lines. I am also willing, in special cases, to look at any possible alternative method of preventing undesirable parking but the practical difficulties are severe.
