§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will publish in HANSARD a table of figures giving as much detailed information as may be readily available to show a comparison of the rise and fall in taxation and prices resulting from Government action between the periods of October, 1964 to January, 1970, and October, 1958 to January, 1964, with special reference to bank rate changes, mortgage rates, personal and company taxation, purchase tax, petrol, and road fund licences.
§ Mr. William RodgersEstimates of the expected effect in a full year of tax changes are given annually in the Financial Statement accompanying the Budget, and, where possible, an estimate is also given of the effect of tax changes on prices. It is not, however, possible over long periods to isolate the effect of changes in rates from changes in the amount or distribution of incomes and expenditure without a detailed study involving an unjustifiable amount of time and expense.
