asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many doctors have been referred by him to the General Medical Council for over-prescribing drugs of addiction; and how many for over-prescribing drugs of dependence during the past year.

In the past year I have drawn the attention of the General Medical Council to two possible cases of serious professional misconduct involving the prescribing of drugs both of addiction and of dependence and three such cases involving only the prescribing of drugs of dependence.
