HC Deb 23 March 1970 vol 798 cc289-90W
Mr. Leslie Huckfield

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will introduce legislation requiring the fitting of radio altimeters as well as barometric ones in civil airliners registered in this country.

Mr. Goronwy Roberts

The radio altimeter is a facility which is regarded primarily as an adjunct to other systems in approach and landing in low weather conditions. While it is not proposed at present to introduce legislation requiring the carriage of such equipment, I am advised by the Air Registration Board that it is unlikely to approve the installation of any automatic landing system in United Kingdom registered aircraft which does not include a radio altimeter.
