asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what reply he has made to the representations from the Police Federation about the term of imprisonment served by persons convicted of the murder of a policeman.

I have written to the Police Federation, and the following is the textI was glad to have the opportunity of discussing recently with Mr. Gale and you the important question of the protection of police officers against violence, and, in particular, the question of the penalty for the murder of a police officer, in the light of Parliament's recent decision to make permanent the abolition of the death penalty. The need to give the police all possible support and protection in their fight against crime, and violent crime in particular, is one of my main concerns.
