asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why the percentage of disabled staff in his Department is below 3 per cent.

Mr. Callaghan

Over 40 per cent. of the staff of the Home Office are employed in prison officer grades on work which is unsuitable for disabled persons. The percentage of disabled staff in relation to other posts in the Home Office is at present 2.6 per cent. The shortfall is due to a shortage of disabled applicants for posts.
