asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the average cost of training (a) a man; (b) a woman, who has been accepted for the Probation and After-Care Service in England and Wales, including the yearly maintenance grant awarded by the Home Office, in the following circumstances:

  1. (1) Home Office training course;
  2. (2) Two years full time at a university;
  3. (3) Three years full time at a university.

The cost of such training is in most cases the same for men and women. It is estimated to be: —

Average annual cost per head £
(1) Home Office Training Course 1,800
(2) Two-year postgraduate training at a university 1,750
(3) Three year training at a university comprising: —
(a) Two-year certificate or diploma course in social studies followed by 450
(b) One-year course in applied social studies 1,650

NOTES:

(i) The above figures reflect only costs met by the Home Office from probation training funds. They do not include such support as is given from universities' general funds, or the value of practical work training facilities provided by the probation and aftercare and other services.

(ii) The figure for the Home Office training course does not include the tutorial and administrative services provided by members of the staff of the Home Office.

(iii) Since 1st January, 1970, students taking a professional course of training in probation and aftercare work as at (1), (2) and (3)(b) above have been treated as trainee employees and paid a salary. Students taking a two-year certificate or diploma course preparatory to professional training as at (3)(a) continue to be paid maintenance grants by the Home Office; no other expenditure falls to be met by the Home Office in respect of this type of training, apart from the normal student tuition fee of about £70 a year.
