§ Dr. John DunwoodyThis information is not available but I am informed that the 1968 School Health Service records of children aged between 5 and 15 years give the following information about those classified as having an unsatisfactory physical condition:
Local education authority Number of children examined Number found unsatisfactory Essex 41,581 46 Bradford 11,883 62 Islington (Inner London Education Authority) 13,784 16 Kingston-upon-Hull 7,873 14 Liverpool 32,343 78 Manchester 20,568 549 Nottingham 15,762 None Portsmouth 6,649 None Stockport 7,095 2 York 6,497 104 Among those so classified will be children thought by the examining doctor to be in poor physical condition because of some disturbance of nutritional state from whatever cause. The low overall prevalence of malnutrition and deficiency disease indicated by these figures is in harmony with the results of a nutrition survey of some 400 pre-school children carried out by the Government Social Survey on behalf of my Department in 1963.
